Construction Site Crime: Why Security Remains a Growing Priority

Construction Site Crime Remains a Growing Concern

Construction site crime continues to have a significant impact on workers, projects and delivery times, with new research highlighting the growing importance of effective site security.

A new BauWatch Crime Report 2026, reported by Benchmark,
highlights the ongoing impact of crime across the UK construction sector.
The research identifies tool theft, physical site security and digital
security threats among the key concerns affecting construction businesses.

According to the report, 38.7% of UK construction workers surveyed
had experienced financial losses as a result of crime
, while
27.7% reported job losses linked to criminal incidents.

The research also found that budget pressures are affecting investment in
site security. 76% of respondents said budget pressures were
leading to compromises in site security
, while the use of fixed
CCTV and CCTV towers had both declined year-on-year.

Key Findings

  • 38.7% of UK respondents reported financial losses caused by crime.
  • 57% reported tool theft as a particular concern.
  • 76% said budget pressures were leading to compromises in site security.
  • 23.1% reported cloning or hacking of digital access credentials.
  • 26.4% said crime-related scheduling problems had resulted in subcontractor replacement.

The Importance of Effective Site Security

The findings highlight how security can affect more than the protection of
equipment and materials. Theft and other criminal incidents can also cause
disruption to project schedules and create additional operational costs.

For construction businesses, combining physical security measures with
monitoring, access control and appropriate technology can help provide
greater visibility across a site and support a more proactive approach to
security.
